Steve Reich Pieces Due For Release

Works previously available only on 1996 box set.

Three early-to-middle-period works by minimalist master Steve Reich will be released April 25 on a disc by the Nonesuch label.

New York Counterpoint (1985), Eight Lines (1979/83) and Four Organs (1970) have previously been available only on the 1996 CD box set, Works: 1965–1995.

The new CD features members of Bang on a Can.

Since he formed his own ensemble, Steve Reich and Musicians, in 1966, the composer has been a leading figure in the minimalist movement. His music is based on repeated figures that evolve over long periods of time, not unlike a glacial version of Bach. They include aspects of Balinese, Hebrew and African music.

As his music has developed, Reich has incorporated new compositional tools in his expressions. New York Counterpoint, for example, is written for clarinet and tape.
