Nicolas Cage: 'I'm Done' Making 'Ghost Rider' Movies

"Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance" is very much a movie for me. As a fan of co-directors Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor well before their Marvel adaptation, and as a fan of Nicolas Cage's signature brand of over-the-top performances, "Spirit of Vengeance" was a movie that worked for me on every level -- or, at least, on the important ones.

That said, I am the first to admit that it's not a movie for everyone. Its 17% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.com says it, too. With that statistic in mind, perhaps it's not surprising to hear that Cage is done making "Ghost Rider" movies.

"I think the ship has sailed on that one," Cage told MTV News at the recent press junket for "The Croods," his new animated movie from Fox and DreamWorks Animation. "At least with me involved."

Cage said he's aware of the polarizing reaction to "Spirit of Vengeance," but made it clear he's proud of the work on the film, particularly given the budget behind it.

"Contrary to whatever the perception is, that was an enormously successful movie," he said. "We made it for, like, $47 or $48 million dollars, and it approached $200 million. I view that as a success. I think people need to know we did that on a shoestring budget. When you look at it that way you see the enormous talent of Mark Neveldine and Bryan Taylor, that they were able to accomplish that."

Cage believes that another "Ghost Rider" movie might happen "down the road" -- "It would be interesting if they did it with a female Ghost Rider," he mused -- but he insisted that his days as Johnny Blaze are behind him... for now.

"Personally, I'm done," he said. "I've done what I had to do with that part. You never say never, but right now, today, I would say that I'm done."

There you have it. No more "Ghost Rider" for Nicolas Cage, at least not for now. If you're jonesing for more Cage in your life, you can hear his voice in "The Croods" on March 22.
