Harry Styles' New Tattoo: Butterfly Or Moth? We Have The Answer!

MTV News asked the expert at the National Museum of Natural History to decipher Styles' latest tat.

According to the Internet (and his Instagram account), One Direction's Harry Styles recently added another tattoo to his ever-growing skin gallery, getting inked with a winged insect stretched out across his diaphragm, a la Rihanna's much-discussed Isis tat.

Eagle-eyed eSleuths first found a pic of the ink on tattoo artist Lyam Sparkes' Flickr page, and postulated that Styles got it sometime in late January. And though said photo has since been deleted, Styles posted another image of it on his Instagram page, with the mysterious caption "Penstagram" added for (presumed) dramatic effect.

Of course, aside from that comment, there's been no further word from Styles about the tattoo, not even an explanation of what it is. Some seem to believe it's a butterfly while others maintain it's a moth.

Not to take anything away from Sparkes' work, but it's easy to see where the confusion started: After all, butterflies and moths both belong to the order Lepidoptera and both have tiny, specialized hairs covering their bodies and wings.

So, to clear up all the confusion, we went to an expert: Dr. Don Davis, curator of Lepidoptera for the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of Natural History. Dr. Davis has spent more than 50 years studying the phylogeny of butterflies and moths, and has even been awarded the Jordan Medal by the Lepidopterists' Society for his work on yucca moths and their allies (and they don't just give that out to anybody). In other words, he definitely knows the difference between an Atlas moth and Zebra Swallowtail butterfly.

So, Dr. Davis ... care to settle this dispute once and for all?

"The tattoo is of a butterfly, species unknown (probably no species in particular, just fabricated)," he wrote in an email to MTV News. "[This is based mainly] on the broad wings and wing pattern."

So there you have it: Harry Styles' new tattoo is a butterfly. Now, we can all move on to the next mystery: What possessed him to get it in the first place?
