News Flash: Flea Copes With Pre-Jane's-Show Jitters

Although admittedly a bit edgy, new Jane's Addiction bassist Flea was, to say the least, pumped about their first official live show Saturday (Oct. 18) since the group broke up six years ago.

"We're gonna blow the doors off. We're gonna rock that shit," said Flea, who first earned his reputation as the funky madcap bass player for his other band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Flea was gearing up for the group's much-anticipated concert at L.A.'s Roxy, sponsored by L.A. modern rock powerhouse, KROQ (106.7 FM). Fans could only aquire tickets to the not-so "secret" gig by winning them over the air.

Flea, who has replaced original Jane's bassist Eric Avery, admitted he was a tad tense. "To tell you the truth, yeah, I am nervous," he told Addicted To Noise Friday afternoon, on the phone from his L.A. home. The show is Jane's first full hometown concert since 1991.

"I haven't been this nervous about a show in so long," he said. "It sort of feels like when I played my first live gig with my first band, What Is This, and we opened for Oingo Boingo at a country club in Receda."

Although a spokesperson for the band had previously described the show as a "stripped-down acoustic" warm-up gig for Jane's upcoming tour, which kicks off on Oct. 30 at New York's Hammerstein Ballroom, Flea said that the volume would, in fact, be cranked to eleven. "No, man, it will be the full electric rock thing," he said.

After bumping his pre-show condition up to "fucking nervous," Flea said that despite hundreds of shows with the Chili Peppers before much bigger audiences, he "woke up freaking" on Friday morning. "But I'm also really excited at the same time," he said. "During our rehearsals this week you could really feel the tension mounting."

Despite the anxiety, Flea said the whole Jane's "Relapse" experience has been a career-energizing one for him and that he's "honored" to be a part of it. "I'm just psyched to be able to give my energy to something like this," he said. "I just want to give, man." -- Gil Kaufman [Sat., Oct. 18, 1997, 9 a.m. PDT]
