Bryan Ferry Announces North American Tour Dates
Singer Bryan Ferry, former leader of art-pop band Roxy Music, will launch
a North American solo tour Nov. 2 in support of his just-released album,
As Time Goes By.
On tour, Ferry will focus on the vintage standards that make up his new
album, but he also plans to dip into the Roxy Music catalog, according
to his publicity firm, Nasty Little Man.
On As Time Goes By, released Tuesday (Oct. 19), Ferry applies his
characteristically dramatic vocals to such vintage songs as "I'm in the
Mood for Love" (RealAudio
excerpt) and "Falling in Love Again" (RealAudio
excerpt). Ferry — who began his solo career with 1973's
These Foolish Things, another all-covers album — last released
Mamouna (1994).
The influential Roxy Music, whose sound moved from glam-rock to glossy
synth-pop during the '70s, broke up and reunited several times before
releasing their final studio album, Avalon, in 1982. The band,
always more popular in Europe than in the U.S., found chart success with
such hits as "Love Is the Drug" (1975) and "Dance Away" (1979).
Roxy Music's lineup initially included Brian Eno, who went on to become
an ambient-music pioneer and an acclaimed producer for such bands as U2,
but he left the band early on.
During the Geneva segment of the Oct. 9 NetAid concerts, Bryan Ferry
played before an invitation-only audience that included such luminaries
as actor Michael Douglas and United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan.
