Pretenders, Mya, Beth Orton, Queen Latifah Set For Lilith
NEW YORK -- Rock veterans the Pretenders, R&B act Mya, pop
singer Monica, indie rockers Cibo Matto, rapper Queen Latifah, popsters
Sixpence None the Richer, trip-hopper Beth Orton and country acts Kelly
Willis and the Dixie Chicks are among the varied acts who'll tour with
the third -- and possibly last -- edition of the all-female Lilith Fair.
The roster, which also includes tour founder Sarah McLachlan and the
previously confirmed Sheryl Crow, Luscious Jackson, Shawn Colvin and the
Indigo Girls, was announced at a press conference Tuesday (April 27).
McLachlan said there will be no Lilith Fair tour next year, and she does
not know if or when the tour will resume after 1999.
"It could be three years, it could be 10 years, it could be never," she
said.
This year's tour will begin with a stadium show July 8 in Vancouver,
British Columbia, and end with another stadium show Aug. 31 in Edmonton, Alberta. In
between, it's scheduled to wind its way down the West Coast, across the
South, up the East Coast and into the Midwest.
For the first Lilith Fair, in 1997, McLachlan included such top artists
as Jewel, Paula Cole, Crow, Tracy Chapman, the Indigo Girls, Fiona Apple
and the Cardigans. The tour was an instant success.
Last year, the lineup included the Indigo Girls, Orton, Natalie
Merchant, Missy Elliott, Cole, Luscious Jackson and Liz Phair.
This edition may be the last Lilith Fair, at least for a while. Tour
organizers have said they don't expect to stage Lilith in 2000.
