Grammy Report #6: Lou Reed, Metallica, Page & Plant Win Rock Grammys

Lenny Kravitz, Alanis Morissette also score early awards in rock categories.

Former Velvet Underground leader and solo star Lou Reed won an early Grammy on Wednesday (Feb. 24), scoring a Best Long Form Music Video for the "Lou Reed: Rock and Roll Heart."

The award for the special chronicling Reed's long career as a

pioneering avant-garde rock musician was announced before the Grammy ceremony. Timothy Greenfield-Sanders, the documentary's director, accepted the award.

"Lou didn't want to get involved in it," said Greenfield-Sanders, speaking of the video biography during a press conference after the award presentation. "He was very detached from it. ... I spoke to him a half-hour ago and he was thrilled."

Greenfield-Sanders said the biggest challenge in compiling the film -- which featured commentary from such contemporaries and fans as Sonic Youth guitarist Thurston Moore and David Bowie -- was cutting down reams of film to one hour.

Alanis Morissette picked up an award for Best Rock Song for her tune "Uninvited" (RealAudio excerpt) from the City of Angels soundtrack, beating out such strong contenders as the Verve's "Bittersweet Symphony" (RealAudio excerpt), Hole's "Celebrity Skin" (RealAudio excerpt), Semisonic's "Closing Time" and John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me."

Also picking up rock Grammys in the pre-ceremony action were heavy-metal giants Metallica and Led Zeppelin founders Jimmy Page & Robert Plant. Metallica won Best Metal Performance for their song "Better Than You" (RealAudio excerpt) from the ReLoad album; Page & Plant won the Best Hard Rock Performance Grammy for their mystical, eastern-tinged song "Most High" (RealAudio excerpt) from their Walking Into Clarksdale album.

Aerosmith picked up an award in the Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal category for their cheeky track, "Pink" (RealAudio excerpt), from their Nine Lives album. Rocker Lenny Kravitz won the Best Male Rock Vocal Performance statue for his massive radio hit, "Fly Away," from his 5 album.

In the Best Rock Instrumental Performance, jazz-rock fusion group the Pat Metheny Group won for their song "The Roots of Coincidence," over Everclear, Propellerheads, Joe Satriani, Kenny Wayne Shepard and Jimmy Vaughan.
