Bill Doss, singer for the Olivia Tremor Control and co-founder of hugely influential indie collective the Elephant 6 Recording Company, died Tuesday (July 31). According to his rep, Doss was 43.

The news of Doss's death was first announced on the OTC's (now crashed) official site, with his bandmates writing, "We are devastated by the loss of our brother Bill Doss ... we are at a loss for words." No cause of death or additional information had been released by press time.

A spokesperson for the band subsequently issued a statement that read, in part, "Please respect the privacy of the Elephant 6 family at this time. Our hearts are with them, and we will release any further statements as its fit in the days to come."

Doss helped found Elephant 6 in the early '90s, along with childhood friends -- and fellow musicians -- Robert Schneider, Will Cullen Hart and Jeff Mangum, and for much of the decade, the collective would release a series of seminal indie albums by the likes of Neutral Milk Hotel, the Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, and Doss's own Olivia Tremor Control, which he originally formed with Mangum and Hart. The group would release a spate of EPs, 7 inches and studio albums (most notably 1996's Music from the Unrealized Film Script: Dusk at Cubist Castle and 1999's Black Foliage: Animation Music Volume One) that strode a fine line between sunny pop and experimental psych-rock.

OTC split up in 2000, though Doss would go on to form another band, the Sunshine Fix, and would later tour and record with the Apples in Stereo. The Olivia Tremor Control would re-form in 2005 and toured several times in subsequent years. In 2011, the band released its first single in a decade, and there had been discussions about another full-length album.
