Best Movies Of 2014
If there's three trends you'll notice on MTV's list of the best movies of 2014, it's these: Chris Pratt; Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill; and Chris Lord and Phil Miller. Or, if you're wondering how to snag the top movie of the year? A combo platter of all of the above.
Without further ado, here they are... The ten movies that made us laugh, made us cry and more than anything stood head and shoulders above the rest of the pack:
"Interstellar"
"Director Christopher Nolan has taken us to Gotham City, inside the dreamscape and, um, Alaska. But for 'Interstellar' he took us beyond the known reaches of space to deliver a visually spectacular journey beyond time... And deep inside the human heart. "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1"
"Are we coming to the tree? The answer to the question asked in Jennifer Lawrence's spooky song at the center of the penultimate installment of the 'Hunger Games' series is yes, absolutely. Things are different this time around: no arena and no sweet, lovable Peeta. Related: wasn't it great to see Josh Hutcherson pull that craziness off? No more Mr. Nice Guy. "22 Jump Street"
"There was no reason to have a sequel to '21 Jump Street,' and then somehow filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller turned that idea - the idea that having a sequel was useless - into the actual, brilliant plot of the movie. Plus Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill proved they were born to work together, and the 'kiss fight' sequence is an all-time comedy classic." - AZ
"Gone Girl"
"Not every adaptation of a hit book gets the benefit of a master director and the original author writing the screenplay. Thanks to David Fincher and Gillian Flynn, however -- not to mention career turns from Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike -- 'Gone Girl' is a bona fide movie, not just book on tape." - Kevin Sullivan
"Obvious Child"
"Who knew that a movie all about the decision to have an abortion could be so damn funny? Jenny Slate's performance in 'Obvious Child' proved the actress has the makings of an offbeat rom-com star, and Jake Lacy is the perfect Tom Hanks to her Meg Ryan. It's nice to see characters who aren't wearing power suits and don't quite have it all figured out yet on screen. It's like director Gillian Robespierre is saying, See? Everyone's kind of a hot mess. "Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes"
"It was a major franchise blockbuster, but it was also an emotionally resonant, deeply meditative look at the power of violence. Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell’s motion capture work was astounding, effectively making audiences everywhere like ape better than human." - Shaunna Murphy
"The Fault In Our Stars"
"Do you have feelings? If you have feelings, you were hit squarely in them by this romantical teenage cancer drama starring Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort. Elgort was charming as the one-legged Augustus, pulling off goofy optimist and self-conscious teen with equal aplomb. Woodley was a believably sardonic Hazel Grace, and whether you admit it or not, your eyes were probably not dry during that (first) funeral scene. It's a good life, Hazel Grace -- and a good movie." - KW
"Guardians Of The Galaxy"
"Marvel knows what the hell they're doing. If you hire talented people to bring interesting characters to life, people will show up whether they've heard of Rocket Raccoon or not. Now everyone has heard of Rocket, Groot, Drax, Gamora and Star-Lord... And we want more." - KS
"Boyhood"
"Ambition is one thing. Skill another. It took huge amounts of both for Richard Linklater to pull off 'Boyhood.' Because of that, we not only have an epic snap-shot of 12 years in the life of a boy, but one of the most undeniably human and well-told stories in film history." - KS
"The LEGO Movie"
"There's so many ways 'The LEGO Movie' could have gone wrong, and instead, in every way it went right. Not only was it the most visually creative movie of the year, it was the funniest, with the catchiest song, the tightest script and the most shocking of all for a movie about toys, the most to say about what it means to be human.
From the opening moments, to the reveal of the KRAGL, to the eventual shockingly poignant reveal of what's behind the evil Lord Business (Will Ferrell), every moment in 'The LEGO Movie' built on the one before it, brilliantly setting up plot threads and exploring its base idea -- how do we play? -- to the fullest extent possible. Everything may be awesome, but 'The LEGO Movie' is movie-making perfection." - AZ
