Snoop, Daz Plead No Contest To Drug Possession
LOS ANGELES -- Daz Dillinger got off $59 cheaper than Snoop
Doggy
Dogg after the rappers pled no contest at their arraignments Tuesday
(July
14) morning for drug possession.
With separate judges ruling their cases, Snoop received the
maximum penalty
of $100 for the charge, while Daz received a lesser fine of $75,
according
to courtroom clerks at Beverly Hills Municipal Court. In addition,
they
each received different penalty assessment charges, bringing Snoop's
grand
total to $270 and Daz's to $211.
"It's up to the judge's discretion what they'll be fined, and in this
case,
the judge handling [Daz's] case fined him with less than the
maximum,"
Deputy District Attorney Ellen Aragon said. She added that the
assessment charges are calculated according to the amount of the
fine.
Snoop, 26, (a.k.a. Calvin Cordozar Broadus), and Daz, 24, (a.k.a. Delmar
Arnaud) -- who did not have to appear -- were represented by their
lawyers.
Daz's attorney Brent Merritt had no comment on the ruling, while
Shawn Chapman, who appeared for Snoop, could not be reached at
press time.
Snoop and Daz were arrested May 1 after summoning police to help
break up a
fight backstage at Universal Ampitheatre in Universal City. The
officers searched the men after smelling marijuana on them, finding
less than one ounce of the drug on each rapper, police said.
Snoop, who is currently on probation for a 1997 conviction of illegal
weapons possession, had faced a maximum of three years in jail if
found
guilty of violating probation based on the drug charge. However, last
week
the rapper appeared in front of Los Angeles County Superior Court
Judge
Jacqueline Conner and pled guilty to the violation. Conner gave him
no jail
time, only stricter terms on his probation.
Snoop, who was acquitted of murder in 1996, now has to report to a
probation officer on a regular basis.
After signing a deal last spring with Master P's No Limit Records,
Snoop
will unleash his third solo album, Da Game is to be Sold, Not to be
Told, on Aug. 4. Rapper and g-funk producer Dillinger is currently
on
recess from his group, Tha Dogg Pound, and concentrating on his solo
career. He released Retaliation, Revenge and Get Back on Death
Row
Records in March.
Snoop and Daz are close to beginning collaboration on an upcoming
film and
soundtrack called "Three The Hard Way," along with Daz's partner in
Tha
Dogg Pound, Kurupt. They'll begin work on the project as soon as
Snoop
finishes the script.
