'Beauty And The Beast' Trailer Is A Stunning Shot-For-Shot Remake Of The Original

There’s really nothing there that wasn’t there before

When it comes to remaking a tale as old as time, it's best not to mess with the original formula — just ask Walt Disney Pictures. It took less than 24 hours for the gorgeous live-action Beauty and the Beast trailer to smash viewing records and even less time for eagle-eyed fans to notice the similarities between it and its animated predecessor.

This side-by-side video, courtesy of Movie Pilot, demonstrates how the 1991 animated classic and the live-action remake starring Emma Watson as Belle share nearly identical footage — with the exception of a few costume designs. (Although Watson's "Something There" ensemble is a perfect match.) The artful parallels are easy to spot:

Back in October, Paige O'Hara, the original voice of Belle, told MTV News that the film "stayed very close" to the animated version. Of course, when you're remaking an Academy Award–nominated classic, why would you risk changing up the magic formula? Aside from two new songs by legendary songwriting duo Alan Menken and Tim Rice, a new job for Belle, and some suspect-looking computer-generated household items, the new Beauty and the Beast won't be terribly different from the classic French fairy tale that inspired it.

That being said, these kinds of remakes aren't exciting if there isn't something new added, so we wouldn't be shocked if Beauty and the Beast has at least a few surprises in store for us come March 2017.
