Angelina Jolie has filed for divorce from Brad Pitt after just over two years of marriage, People confirmed. The couple married August 23, 2014, but have been together since 2004 (they made their relationship public in 2005) and have six children — Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox.

According to legal documents filed Monday, per TMZ, Jolie listed their official date of separation as September 15. She is reportedly asking for physical custody of the children, and for Pitt to be granted visitation.

"Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage. This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time," Jolie's rep told People.

Pitt also made a statement to People, saying , "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Jolie and Pitt first met on the set of their 2005 spy thriller, Mr. & Mrs. Smith.
