If the MTV Video Music Awards had an inspirational quote, it would probably go something like this: "Shoot for the Moonman. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars."

The Moonman, introduced at the very first VMAs in 1984, is the flashy silver statue given to VMA winners during their acceptance speeches. (And those who don't win one still land among the many stars hanging out on the red carpet, of course.) The Moonman holds a flag, and boy, has that flagpole seen things. Celebrities rightfully like to get creative with the Moonmen they win, so in the 33 years of VMA shows, the Moonman has gotten around.

Here's where it's traveled.

Miley Cyrus's mouth

Having hosted the show in 2015 and famously performed with twerked on Robin Thicke in 2013, Miley Cyrus has certainly made her mark on the VMAs. It's only fitting she leaves a little spit on the Moonman.

Avril Lavigne's mouth

Lavigne, decked out in all her "Sk8er Boi" glory, won Best New Artist in 2002 and bit her Moonman as if it were an Olympic gold medal. I doubt her dentist approves.

Missy Elliott's mouth

So did this leave behind a lipstick stain or nah? Because that would be a GREAT pic, just saying.

Taylor Swift's cat's mouth

Can you not, Olivia? You're gonna scratch it, and those statues are worth, like, thousands of dollars. Kthnxbye.

Taylor Swift's kitchen table

Yes, the Moonman is important enough to get its own seat at the table — right next to Hailee Steinfeld! Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, after all.

Taylor Swift uses the Moonman's flagpole to stir her coffee, which I find rather rude. It resides next to her plethora of fancy-schmancy coffee makers.

Tay also gave every member of her "Bad Blood" squad their very own Moonman after they won Video of the Year in 2015.

Hayley William's face

Williams is one of the few winners who didn't try to eat her award. The Crimson Curse would be proud.

Lance Bass's bathroom

I take back what I said about Taylor Swift being rude using hers as a kitchen appliance. This is the rudest Moonman use of them all. A toilet paper holder? Really? Bye bye bye, Lance.

Weezer's bathroom

Reddit user mysteryguitarm shared this pic but didn't reveal who the mysterious VMA winner was. Then, eagle-eyed Redditors did some sleuthing and discovered it belongs to Weezer drummer Patrick Wilson.

Outer space

In 1996 — a whopping 20 years ago! — the Moonman traveled to actual outer space. Russian cosmonauts Valery Korzun and Aleksandr Kaleri brought the statue aboard their Mir space station. During the show, host Dennis Miller tried to broadcast a live interview with the duo while they jetted around the galaxies. Unfortunately "the delay in Earth-to-space communication and the language barrier" made it impossible for anyone to understand each other. Oops.
