MisterWives’ ‘Not Your Way’ Video Is A Middle Finger To The Patriarchy

‘Women are held to this absurd standard of what beauty is’

MisterWives have stepped into a time machine for their new "Not Your Way" music video, which doubles as a 1920s silent film. Lead singer Mandy Lee — dressed as a guy — stars as Man-D, the "most powerful entertainment executive on the planet," in the clip, released Monday (August 22). The rest of the band play musicians trying to catch their big break under the leadership of Man-D.

"I've been pursuing music since I was 13, and along the way so many men have told me things like 'You need to dress sexier,' or 'Let's have you lose 5 to 10 pounds,'" Lee told Lenny on Monday. "Just all of the different things that strip you of who you are and how the industry tries to fit you into this unrealistic and unhealthy mold that doesn't allow women to just be celebrated."

"Not Your Way" is her response to all the dudes who told her what to do, what to wear, and what to say. In the end, she decided it was her way or the highway.

"I thought it would be fun to flip the script and project what women go through onto men. It's comedic and slapstick, but at the same time the core of it is the message that this is what women go through," Lee continued. "In every aspect, everywhere you look, women are held to this absurd standard of what beauty is or what we should do with our lives."

You go, girl. 🙌
