MTV News Playlist: Prince’s Universe
You know Prince through his songs, through his dazzling live performances, and through his film career. But the late rock star's legacy reaches far beyond just his own music — he also mentored, produced, and wrote songs for dozens of musicians. You can find Prince's writing credits on Madonna’s “Love Song” or The Bangles’ “Manic Monday," among many others; you can trace his influence on the music that artists such as Sheila E., Mavis Staples, and George Clinton released on his Paisley Park Records label; you can even hear him playing synths on Stevie Nicks’s “Stand Back” — a song inspired by Prince's 1982 classic, “Little Red Corvette.”
With this playlist, we're giving you a slice of Prince’s universe: a collection of songs by artists he worked with and inspired, including stars like Janelle Monáe and D'Angelo, as well as musicians who influenced his work, like Joni Mitchell and Parliament-Funkadelic. These are the artists who helped expand Prince's artistry, and many will carry it forward today.
