'Star Trek Into Darkness' Breaks the Internet
Well, it would appear that "Star Trek" enthusiasm is alive and well as a bunch of Trekkies have so far made at least one website go dark with their slobbering fanatic mania.
"Star Trek Into Darkness" opens on May 9 in the UK and tickets went on sale yesterday for the first round of IMAX screenings. Crazed "Trek" fans flooded the IMAX site, causing it to have ten times more traffic than usual. Yeah, you see where this is going, right?
Apparently, IMAX may have super-big screens but only the tiniest of bandwidths, as the site promptly broke with all the excess clicking going on.
As you can imagine, there was total bedlam as angry "Trek" fans with British accents spewed their rage all to and fro after they were denied a ticket that would allow them to attend the life-changing event. The British Film Institute tried to control the situation with a noble tweet, but we doubt it made anyone feel any better:
Due to overwhelming demand for Star Trek @bfi IMAX online booking iscurrently down. We're doing all we can to rectify. Do bear with us.

Paramount Pictures tried to come up with a Plan B, but whatever:
To book @bfi @imax tickets for #StarTrek #IntoDarkness call 0330 333 7878, while their online booking is down due to overwhelming demand.

This isn't the first time this has happened with a big summer movie sequel. Last year, tons of Bat-fans looking to see "The Dark Knight Rises" as soon as possible broke the IMAX sites in Melbourne and Sydney within minutes of advance tickets going on sale. Apparently, IMAX has no interest in learning from previous online (or, rather, offline) disasters.
Anyway, the site's back up and everyone's blood pressure has more or less returned to normal. Advance tickets are also on sale for the first IMAX screenings in the U.S. on May 15, two days before the film opens in non-IMAX theaters.
