If we had known there was a "Fans" section on the set of "The Perks of Being a Wallflower," we probably would've been there, too.

"Perks" is based on the epistolary (a la "Dracula") novel by Stephen Chbosky (who also adapted and directed the film), originally published by MTV Books in February 1999. The book has since garnered a very passionate fan base, with many readers considering it to be the coming-of-age story for their generation.

So it comes as no surprise that some of these fans would camp out just outside the set of the "Perks" movie, just to be a part of it in some way — a "'Perks' Pilgrimage," as it's described by Ezra Miller, who plays Patrick in the film.

"[They] just stood outside, and there was caution tape lined up all the way around; people were just lined up, waiting at, like, two or three in the morning," says Johnny Simmons (Brad), describing what sounds more like the line for Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con than a typical movie set.

These weren't "creepy" fans, either — the cast ended up bonding with their unofficial co-stars.

"They would be the same people every day so we would get to go talk to them," says Mae Whitman (Mary Elizabeth). "They were very much a part of the movie."

And they were there because they couldn't imagine being anywhere else. "There were so many people there who came because to them this work of art means everything," says Miller.

All this talk of the passion for "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" gives Whitman goosebumps — we're starting to get them as well!
