Michael Fassbender Crashes and Burns (With Love) in New Role

They say that the faster the rise, the steeper the fall and nobody has had a faster rise than Michael Fassbender, who made the quantum leap from "that guy who was in that scene in "Inglorious Basterds'" to international A-list superstar thanks to a year full of hit films including, "X-Men: First Class," "Shame" and "A Dangerous Method."

So is Fassbender set up for a major crash?

Well, according to Variety, the answer is yes — but it's actually good news, because that epic crash is going to take place on screen in the romantic drama "The Mountain Between Us." Sometimes you just can't keep a good man up.

Here's the dilly: Based on the novel of the same name by author Charles Martin, "The Mountain Between Us" tells the tale of a manly doctor (that's Fassbender) and a lady writer (actress still to be determined) who, after their flight gets canceled, team up to charter a plane. Unfortunately, the pilot has a heart attack and the place crashes into a mountain, leaving the two survivors in the fight of their lives — and in the grip of new-found romance.

And since Fassbender proved beyond a doubt last year that he was both a major badass and an epic level ladies man, this seems like the perfect fit for him. Just when he and director Gerardo Naranjo (best known for last year's incendiary indie "Miss Bala") are going to actually film this one is unclear, as Fassbender already has a bunch of other projects lined up, but it can't come soon enough for us.

Because this is one crash we can't wait to rubberneck.
