He kicked ass in "Ghost Rider," was a spirit of vengeance in "Kick-Ass" and nearly/disastrously starred as Superman, but Nicolas Cage doesn't just play superheroes, he reads 'em! The man named after Marvel's Luke Cage had a collection so enticing it inspired the most daring comic book theft of all-time, so daring it's now a major motion picture to-be.

The Hollywood Reporter says the story of the theft in 2000 of three of Cage's most valuable comics is now being framed as a heist comedy called "Action No. 1" at Lionsgate. The title refers to the ultra-rare "Action Comics #1" (i.e. Supes' first appearance), which was taken and then recovered in 2011, and has since set a World Record price of $2.16 million at auction.

Billion-dollar screenwriting duo Robert Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon of "Night At The Museum" and "Reno 911!" fame hatched the scheme to turn the tale into a loopy satire, with Cage in mind to pull a "Being John Malkovich" and play himself. However, it looks unlikely that the actor is willing to lampoon himself this directly, so other names like Jason Statham have been dropped. Andy Samberg anybody?

The Man of Steel is clearly an obsession for Cage, having named his son Kal-El, but the theft actually convinced the consummate comic book freak to auction off his collection in 2002 for $1.6 million.

"Three of my best comics were robbed – 'Action One,' 'Detective 27' [first appearance of Batman] and 'Detective 14,'" said Cage at the time. "Those books today would be worth, I don't know how much, more than the whole collection itself was at the time. It occurred to me that I didn't want that in my house anymore because I didn't want that sort of temptation for people to do that, so I sold everything."
