Movies Streaming/On Demand This Week: 'Ted,' 'Total Recall' & More

New this week includes Seth MacFarlane’s first foray into movies with "Ted," Colin Farrell jumping into Schwarzenegger’s shoes for "Total Recall" and see a much darker look at a young girl’s trip to Grandmother’s house with "Red Riding Hood."

NEW RELEASES

'Ted'

For his first attempt at jumping into movies, "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane doesn’t disappoint as his crass brand of comedy is displayed in all its glory. Mark Wahlberg plays manchild John, who has been hanging out with a stuffed animal (voiced by MacFarlane) since he wished it would come to life back when he was a child. But when John’s girlfriend (Mila Kunis) wants more out of their relationship, he must choose between his smoking hot partner or his fluffy bear.

Why Watch It: Wahlberg + crude toy = comedy gold.

Available On: iTunes, VUDU

'Total Recall'

Twenty-two years after Arnold Schwarzenegger told us to "Get your ass to Mars," the sci-fi mindbender inspired by the Philip K. Dick short story gets a reboot with Colin Farrell at the helm.

Why Watch It: The CGI is obviously an improvement from 1990, and who can resist a Kate Beckinsale/Jessica Biel catfight?

Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant

From director John Hilcoat and an all-star cast including Tom Hardy, Shia LaBeouf, Jessica Chastain and Guy Pearce, this Depression-era drama follows a bootlegging gang who must make a stand against a group of corrupt cops.

Why Watch It: LaBeouf has said he got real method for his role, so try to find the scene where he’s hammered the most.

Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, VUDU

'ParaNorman'

In this spooky animated comedy, social outcast Norman finds himself able to interact with ghosts. When one of them ends up to be a witch, he learns only he can save the town from the crazed zombies that have suddenly appeared.

Why Watch It: A fun time with Casey Affleck, Anna Kendrick and Kodi Smit-McPhee all lending their voices to characters.

Available On: Cable On Demand, VUDU, Amazon Instant

'The Apparition'

Ashley Greene stars in this thriller about a group of college students who believe that paranormal events only occur because we believe in them, and conduct an experiment to prove it. Needless to say, they get more than they bargain for when they prove to be correct.

Why Watch It: Has some pretty impressive scares.

Available On: iTunes, Cable On Demand, Amazon Instant

'Red Riding Hood'

This isn’t your mama’s fairytale. "Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke casts Amanda Seyfried to play the red hooded villager, Valerie, who falls for a rebel woodcutter who may or may not be a werewolf. Then things get complicated when she heads off to Grandma’s house.

Why Watch It: Highly stylized and Gary Oldman as the werewolf hunter is in his scenery chewing glory.

Available On: iTunes

OLDIES BUT GOODIES

Roman Polanski’s legendary feature debut launched a career and inspired a generation of filmmakers to make thrillers. In the film, a married couple invite a young hitchhiker on a sailing trip.

Available On: iTunes, VUDU, Amazon Instant, Hulu Plus

'Love The Hard Way'

Before winning an Oscar for "The Pianist" (and those Gillette commercials), Adrien Brody starred in this gritty grifter tale about a small-time NYC thief who falls for an innocent looking girl (Charlotte Ayanna) who tries to put him on the straight and narrow.

Available On: SnagFilms (free)

'Double Take'

With all this attention to Alfred Hitchcock at the moment, you may enjoy this clever use of footage from the real Hitch. In "Double Take" (no, not that Eddie Griffin/Orlando Jones comedy), director Johan Grimonprez uses the Master of Suspense as a launching pad for an avant-garde look at Cold War fears.
