New York Comic Con 2012: ‘Evil Dead’ Panel Recap

After the "Carrie" panel today at New York Comic Con, another reboot took the stage, and although both are classified as horror, the two panels had a completely different tone. While the "Carrie" panel (a write up of which you can find here) featured a lot of intelligent discussion on filmmaking, acting and adaptation, the "Evil Dead" panel featured a whole lot of laughing so much my face hurt because Bruce Campbell is a genius and Jane Levy is every bit as charmingly dry as her character on "Suburgatory."

The panel began with simply an image from the film, one very reminiscent of "The Exorcist," as Campbell discussed the reasons behind a reboot. They wanted to revisit the world so badly, but, "As middle aged filmmakers, we thought maybe it was too late to strap on that chainsaw one more time." So Sam Raimi hand picked director Fede Alvarez, who described the moment he was asked to come on board, citing the phone call he received from Raimi himself asking him to remake "Evil Dead."

"When Sam Raimi asks you that, you don't say 'no thank you, I don't do remakes', you say 'F**k yeah!' and try to make the best remake you could ever make." Levy went after the role, doubly excited after Campbell warned her about getting buried alive and the discomfort that comes along with fake projectile vomiting. If Campbell had any doubt before, it's gone now, professing, "If you need me to crown her as the new Ash, I will crown her my f**king self."

After being told quite a few times that the film they are making is very serious and horrifying, we were treated to some surprise footage. And the footage.

How do I even. THIS TRAILER. It takes you on a journey. A journey that goes like this "Oh, this is gonna be funny. Hah! It's like "Cabin in the Woods." But that's weird, cause *that* was funny, so can this really be that funny? Oh wait. Oh. Okay, so this isn't a comedy. Oh my god. OH GOD. WAIT. Oh-ohhh NOOOOOOO AHHH WAIT WHAT HOLY CRAP ohmygod AHHH WHY wait wait wait holy crap NO AHH WHAT WHAT AHH, okay, phew it's over, OH GOD NO IT'S NOT WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! AHHH" But this sort of imagery should not be ruined for you in a trailer recap. Watch for yourself and see how sick to your stomach you get. Oh dear god, I can't wait. And judging by the room's standing ovation, neither can anyone else.

Levy too was impressed, expressing how terrified she was by the footage, later saying it again to the director (but picked up by the mics), and when asked if it is scary to watch even though she shot it and knows what happened, she replied, "I swear to god, I am so scared right now, I'm not kidding, that freaked the s**t out of me." From the sound and look of it, the film is truly being made for fans of the original, not only committing to hard R horror, but dropping in references to both "Evil Dead" and "Evil Dead 2," some that only die hard fans will understand. But in updating the material, it's not only the astoundingly gory modern day effects we have to look forward to, but a script doctored by Diablo Cody.

The entire panels was a hoot, Campbell cracking up the audience multiple times, and almost making a woman pass out by coming to the edge of the stage to kiss her hand, but also got the skeptical crowd legitimately excited about the film, so a win all around. Plus, Levy hinted that there is a play on words with the characters names and if you put them all together, it might spell something out. Hmmmm.

The hard hard hard R film opens in April 2013.
