Watch Vince Staples Defy Gravity In New ‘Lift Me Up’ Video
Vince Staples is on the rise, both literally and figuratively. Riding high off the release of his mainstream breakout LP, last year’s Summertime ’06, the Cali rapper has released a new video for standout single “Lift Me Up.”
The vid takes the track’s title literally, as Vince levitates and rhymes his way through his native Long Beach. Against backdrops of oceanside piers and empty streets, his body contorts oddly but he stays totally relaxed, as the camera floats around him and seagulls fly overhead.
Like many of the other tracks on Summertime ’06, “Lift Me Up” helps paint a complex and candid portrait of what it’s like growing up in Long Beach. “I never vote for presidents, the presidents that change the hood are dead and green,” Vince raps, later lamenting, “Fight between my conscience and the skin that's on my body/ Man I need to fight the power, but I need a new Ferrari.” It’s all part of the MC questioning the harsh reality of his surroundings -- but, as the vid proves, he's rising above it all.
