Fans worried that newcomers Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could possibly edge out Black Widow and Hawkeye from "Avengers: Age of Ultron" need not worry, says writer/director Joss Whedon. At two separate events during last weekend's San Diego Comic-Con International, the Avengers assembler revealed that there's still plenty of room for the spytastic duo, and that they might even get bigger roles to play in the sequel.

While Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow got more screen time than most of her teammates in the first film, Hawkeye hardly registered. Jeremy Renner was publicly bummed by the role the archer played in the final film, and that's something Whedon has taken into consideration for "Age of Ultron" since Renner's involvement was confirmed.

"It's very much a global Avengers film," said Whedon in a quote reported by ScreenRant. "A lot of the movie has to do with their place not just in America, but the world. Part of the fun for me, definitely this time around, is writing Hawkeye. He did get possessed pretty early by a bad guy and had to walk around all scowly for most of the movie, so now it's nice to actually have the character there and see him interact with the other guys."

This bodes well for the character, and makes since considering that Hawkeye's solo series by Matt Fraction and David Aja—which debuted just a few months after "Marvel's The Avengers" hit—has become one of Marvel's most prestigious and successful series.

While Black Widow may not have a comic book to her name yet (although Natasha fans should definitely check out her short story in last week's "A+X" #10 by B. Clay Moore and Kris Anka), Whedon told the crowd at Nerd HQ in a question and answer session that the super spy factors into "Age of Ultron" in a big way.

"Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don't have their own franchises. Although she in 'Cap 2,' [and] she's great. She was the most fun for me because she's not a hero, you know, and it's something that I read—and I feel bad that I can't remember who wrote the book—but it's in one of the books explaining, 'These guys are heroes, you are a spy. It's a different thing—it's a different skill set—and you don't have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.' And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I've got going on with her in the second one is killer."
