Secret Connection Between U.S. Women's Soccer Team And MTV News Revealed!

Kate, we sooned learned, was more than just your average youngster who wanted to work at MTV News one day. It turned out she'd spent that previous summer in Sydney, Australia, with the rest of the U.S. women's national soccer team ... winning a silver medal.

To which we all replied, "Huh?"

Yes, here was a real-live Olympian in our midst. Just like the ones you see on TV. She even brought her medal into work one day, which was really awesome. Despite this being a place where celebrities come and go daily, an actual Olympic medal really stopped traffic in the hallways.

Kate was an awesome intern, and after she left us, she went on to play in the now-defunct Women's United Soccer Association, winning defender of the year in 2001. She also played for the U.S. Olympic team in 2004 and again this year.

So last night when I heard they'd won the gold (again!), I smiled and thought of our friend from a few years ago, number 15, now known as Kate Markgraf. Kate, we're really proud of you and the rest of the back-to-back gold-medal team. You're by far our most successful and famous former intern.
