Peplum ain't anything new (its first appearance actually dates back to 500 B.C.), but this summer, we're resurfacing the hourglass-enhancing silhouette and taking it down a notch—literally. Right now, it's all about adding a little peplum to the bottom of our skirts and dresses, which transforms the ol' drop waist into an incredibly dramatic look. You can blame Balmain for officially making this a thing (their Spring/Summer 2014 collection was jam-packed with gorgeous, fluted goodness!), so we thought it was time for us regular folk to give it a go. Are y'all ready?

THE MINI

If you're tired of bandage skirts and want a fresh way to show off dem legs, the mini peplum hem skirt is your best bet. You can turn heads in a hot pink piece ($95), be super badass in a leather-and-animal-print look ($36), or go minimally chic in a monochrome graphic number ($66).

THE MIDI

For a more ladylike/work-appropriate look, we suggest going for a killer peplum hem midi skirt. Opt for something solid to mix-and-match with everything in your wardrobe ($104) or pick a statement print like florals ($87) or polka dots ($74) to really stand out.

THE DRESS

If you're going all in on the drop-waist look, we suggest swiping up a super-short dress to keep the dramatic silhouette at bay. For a memorable night out, we love a solid silver embellished frock ($77), and for daytime, a pale jacquard-print dress ($114) or a black-and-white check number ($78) can easily become a summer staple.
