EXCLUSIVE: Harrison Ford Is 'Done' With Han Solo

Honestly, has any character meant more to the '70s/'80s generation than the cool, smirking scoundrel at the helm of the Millennium Falcon? If so, it’s hard to imagine who it could be.

Recently, after 10 years in this crazy business of asking movie people questions, I finally managed to get an interview with the reportedly elusive, somewhat gruff Harrison Ford. And I’m proud to report that in real life, he struck me as neither. But since he recently returned to Indiana Jones after 20 years without the whip, I had to ask a question that means a great deal to me and many people in my generation: Will he ever play Han Solo again?

“I wouldn’t take that bet,” he said, shutting the door on the reckless smuggler once and for all. “I wouldn’t bet on that, no.”

Over the decades, we’ve heard all kinds of rumblings that George Lucas had plans to make a third trilogy, and that episodes 7, 8, and 9 would depict a late-in-life Solo, Leia, Luke and the others. Those hopes seem to have faded over the years... but if Ford can play Indy at age 66, it never felt certain that he wouldn’t give Han Solo one last shot.

Until now.

“No, no, no. Han Solo was very good to me at a certain point in my career,” explained the legendary star, who will be seen in the drama "Extraordinary Measures" on January 22nd. “But I’m done. I’m done with him.”

In this age of remakes and re-imaginings, I’ve got to say that it’s nice to know we won’t be seeing Han Solo bastardized or brought out of mothballs any time soon. And although I’m sure he’s been told thousands of times, I couldn’t leave the room without reminding Ford how much Han Solo meant to myself and my generation.

“Well, I’m glad,” the actor said with a grin. “Thank you.”

What do you think of Ford’s declaration that Han Solo is done? Does it make you happy, or sad that you’ll never again see him wielding that modified DL-44 blaster or smacking the Millennium Falcon's malfunctioning control panels?
