Gaze At These Brave (And Naked) Veterans And Feel Free To Let The Thirst Take Over
In July, photographer Michael Stokes set his Kickstarter in motion, asking for tens of thousands of dollars for his project. A lofty goal, but he raised that money in the next hour -- and much, much more.
The Kickstarter in question, a push to publish two photography books highlighting nude or mostly nude figures of fitness models, bodybuilders and veterans made an astounding $411,134, even though its goal was only $48,250.
The books, "Exhibition" and "Always Loyal" (which focuses solely on amputee veterans), will be released on Sunday, Nov. 15. Since the Kickstarter was so successful, instead of pocketing most of the profit, Stokes decided to donate $20,000 to the Semper Fi Fund, a charity that benefits wounded warriors.
As for what Stokes is doing next, he says he's going to take a "day or so as a break" and then he'll get right back to work.
His newest subject, Bobby Henline, was the only survivor of a Humvee attack on April 7, 2007 in Zaganiyah, Iraq. The four men he was with all died as a result of the attack, but Henline emerged with his life -- but also with burns covering 40% of his body.
"I listen to all criticisms and one of them is, 'By cherry picking guys that are fit, is that really fair to your average soldier who served?' [So, for my latest project,] I purposely focused on [Henline]," Stokes told MTV News. "Bobby came to stay with me for a couple of days and we did a shoot. I'm happy to say that I'm trying to expand the work a little bit."
