Victoria Justice Opens Up About Living With Hashimoto’s Disease

The actress reveals how living with the thyroid disorder has affected her confidence.

We often don’t think of young, beautiful celebrities having to go through painful health trauma, but as we recently saw with Selena Gomez’s brave decision to open up about her struggle with lupus, no one is immune to an invisible illness.

The same goes for Victoria Justice, who covers Health magazine’s November issue (and looks amazing, BTW). Inside, the former “Eye Candy” actress opens up about her “devastating” struggle with Hashimoto’s disease, a thyroid autoimmune disorder that interferes with thyroid function and affects metabolism.

The 22-year-old said she had to go on a “super-strict” pescatarian diet after being diagnosed, and couldn’t eat wheat, sugar or dairy for two months. She also revealed that the illness caused acne and weight fluctuations.

“They had put me on this thyroid medication, and I think the levels were too high for me because it caused my skin to break out,” she explained. “All my life I’ve always had great skin, so it was really devastating. Also, at first, I was losing a lot of weight, then I went on tour and I started gaining weight, and it was the most I’d ever gained in my life.”

Along with the physical effects she suffered from the disease, Justice admitted it also threatened her self-esteem.

“It definitely did affect my confidence, and it made me a little bit more self-conscious,” she said. “But at the end of the day, I had the support of my family and friends. I knew that the people around me had my back. Now I really empathize with people who have issues with their skin, because it can get you down.”

Justice said she's still living with Hashimoto's, but "things have leveled out" and she's now "back to normal." Hopefully it'll stay that way for a long time to come!
