Here's The Story Behind The New Aaliyah Fragrance

We spoke with the fragrance maker.

An Aaliyah fragrance is being released.

Aaliyah By Xyrena is being dropped as a tribute to the singer who died in a 2001 plane crash. Xyrena CEO Killian Wells told us all about the campaign’s plans and how the star’s family was involved.

"From day one we worked with Aaliyah's estate to ensure that every aspect of this release met their approval,” Wells explained in a statement to MTV News. "They appreciated that we wanted to create a fragrance that was really about Aaliyah, not just a generic scent with her name on the bottle.”

According to Wells, Aaliyah's brother Rashad Haughton also helped in the process. "Rashad provided us with a handful of colognes that Aaliyah frequently wore which we then used as inspiration, pulling notes from each that worked well together to create an entirely new formula,” he continued.

The unisex fragrance already has one of Aaliyah’s famous friend's support. Missy Elliot, who tweeted about it this morning.

Wells said Missy and Tim will be receiving bottles of the fragrance though they weren't involved in making the product. The company is also hoping to land another big name supporter: Drake.

"Drake will also be receiving a bottle since he's one of Aaliyah's biggest fans,” he added. “Maybe Aaliyah by Xyrena will be his new go-to fragrance.”

Five percent of the fragrance sales are set to be donated to The Aaliyah Memorial Fund. The fragrance is reportedly set to ship mid-October.
