Are 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' Baddies WCKD Really All That Bad?

Are WCKD wicked? Or are they just misunderstood, man?

With reporting by Nicole Pajer.

Is WCKD, the organization revealed to be in charge of the titular maze in "The Maze Runner," really all that wicked? You'd think so, based on the name (which stands for World In Catastrophe: Killzone Experiment Department, natch), but according to the actual cast of "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials," the answer might not be as easy as black and white.

"I think it's not that simple," Kaya Scodelario told MTV News during a recent press day for the film. "That's what Teresa is trying to explore. It's a bigger picture. I don't think she necessarily believes in good and bad, as black and white as everyone else does."

However, the rest of Scodelario's cast mates -- who have a far less "complicated" relationship with WCKD than Teresa does in the film -- say that it's all about the Gladers, who do their best to thwart WCKD's devious-seeming plans for them throughout the film.

"They're fighting for the truth," newcomer Rosa Salazar explained. "I'm not going to be a cog in the machine. I'm not gonna just follow someone who is doing horrible things."

"The Gladers are all about finding a cure, but finding it in the right way, and not having to extinct a whole... generation," Dexter Darden continued.

Series star Dylan O'Brien, however, is just really, really happy that the movie keeps you guessing.

"I love that throughout the entire series, you go so back and forth... being convinced that WCKD is one way or the other," he said. "It's not black and white, and that's the way the world is."

"Maze Runnner: The Scorch Trials" hits theaters on September 18.
