Her Parents Tried To Marry Her Off At 15, And She Said No. This Is Her Story.

'Why don't you understand that if I study and earn for myself, I won't need to rely on anyone to survive?'

On Wednesday, August 12, Humans of Bombay -- the Indian version of photographer Brandon Stanton’s famous Humans of New York blog — posted a striking pic of a young girl who’s speaking out against child marriage.

"My parents took me away from Bombay to our village to get me married," she said. "This was at the age of 15 and even though I saw the boy, I made it clear that I couldn't get married." 👏👏👏

Nobody wins when underage girls -- or boys, for that matter -- are married off. Globally, one in four women are married before age 18. The practice is especially common in developing nations, and the outcomes are less than awesome.

Suzanne Petroni, senior director of Gender, Population and Development at

" target="_blank">The International Center for Research on Women previously told MTV News that child marriage is a straight-up

human rights violation. Those who marry young are less likely to continue their eduction, so they make less money going forward. Girls end up having their own children very early, which puts their health at risk.

"A few months ago, my Mama called my mother and said that he wanted me to marry a divorced man with two children," the girl from Bombay continued. "I got so angry when my mother even mentioned this. I said, 'How can I mother two children, when I'm a child myself? Why don't you understand that [if] I study and earn for myself, I won't need to rely on anyone to survive?'"

The post has since gone viral, gaining over 60K likes. People from across the world asked how they can make the girl’s dream of becoming an Indian police service officer a reality. Humans of Bombay reports that she's supported by Aangan, a child protection organization. To help out, email actnow@aanganindia.org.
