Here’s How You (Yes, You) Can Land A Role On ‘Empire’

The show is launching a nationwide search for its next big star.

Think you have what it takes to go toe-to-toe with Cookie Lyon or out-rap Hakeem?

FOX is kicking off a nationwide search for the next big “Empire” star — and the grand prize is an appearance as an artist on the show's second season, which premieres this fall.

A cross-country bus tour — dubbed “Fox’s Next Empire Artist" — will stop in 15 major cities, where fans will get the opportunity to record their own versions of the show’s biggest hits. Aspiring stars will also have the choice to submit an a cappella version of a song to the contest.

Even for fans with less-than-stellar vocal skills, this tour sounds pretty amazing — in true lavish “Empire” style, the bus is painted gold and comes fitted with a fully-furnished recording studio, as well as samples of Cookie’s fresh-baked cookies (naturally).

The contest kicks off July 16 in Los Angeles and will travel to San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, Detroit, St. Louis, Dallas, New Orleans, Nashville, Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., New York, and Boston.

All in all, this sounds like a pretty amazing way for FOX to fill in the void that “American Idol” left behind. And it's sure to be a career-maker for some lucky, undiscovered artist who’ll hopefully get the chance to become Lucious or Cookie’s next protégé — or a possible threat to Jamal or Hakeem.

“Empire” became a huge phenomenon last year, thanks in part to its original music (overseen by producer Timbaland), as well as its irresistible soapy fun, Shakespearean themes, and genius zingers courtesy of Ms. Cookie. The show returns for its second season on Sept. 23.
