9 Things We Learned From Eminem’s Apple Music Interview

Eminem explains why '8 Mile' was 'fun, but it wasn't.'

Eminem made his presence felt today, as the first guest on Zane Lowe's radio show through Apple Music's Beats 1 station.

The rapper mainly appeared on the program to talk about his involvement with "Southpaw," a film that's slated to hit theaters July 24.

But the interview also allowed us to hear more about Em's experience on "8 Mile" and his upcoming music video for "Phenomenal." Here are nine takeaways from Slim's Q&A:

The 'Phenomenal' Video Will Be...Different

"We're just trying to do something different," he said. "Put me in a different scenario, different set-up, different scenery."

Here's Why Em Isn't In 'Southpaw'

"The actual movie, the concept, [came about] almost five years ago," Em explained. "There was a script in the works. The idea, originally, was to have me in it. At the time that they were ready to shoot and everything was coming together, my schedule didn't work with it."

"Seeing how Jake Gyllenhaal smashed this, it made sense that we still wanted something to do with the project," he added. "So, we circled back around and said, 'What if we make music for it?'"

In Fact, He Thought The Whole Film Was 'Incredible'

"I wouldn't change a thing about it," he said. "The way that Jake did it, he smashed it. The movie's incredibe."

Kurt Sutter Signs And Discusses

"Being a huge fan of 'Sons of Anarchy,' as well, the chance to work on something with [Kurt Sutter] is incredible," Em said.

"I'm a super boxing fan," Slim said. "I don't miss many fights."

He Once Even Learned How To Box

"About seven or eight years ago, I had trained for about a year with Emanuel Steward," he added.

'8 Mile' Gave Him Hunger

"That movie gave a slight edge of inspiration that I don't think I had at that particular time," he explained. "Doing that movie put me right back in certain elements. It made me for some reason feel hungry again, the whole battle rap scene."

And '8 Mile' 'Was Fun, But It Wasn't'

"It was like being a hamster going from one wheel to the next," he said. "It was a music trailer, and it was a trailer where I gotta learn the lines, learning the scenes, writing, trying to record and then trying to get a little workout here and there. In between takes, I remember writing on my hand because I didn't have a piece of paper at the time. It was fun, but it wasn't. It was intense."

The music video for "Phenomenal" is also set to make its debut through Apple Music, according to Zane Lowe. In a sneak peek we got yesterday, it's clear that Slim's about to become an action movie star in the clip. Check out more of that here.
