“Jurassic World” director Colin Trevorrow recently said that if there’s a “Jurassic” sequel, he won’t be the one directing it. That revelation immediately reignited rumors that he might be considered for helming an upcoming “Star Wars” film. After all, the third anthology flick still needs a director, and Trevorrow was at the center of speculation as far back as 2012, when Lucasfilm first announced it would be resurrecting the series.

Speaking to MTV News, Trevorrow admitted those rumors were “very strange” and explained that, although he’s a big fan of “Star Wars,” he’s not ready to commit to directing one.

“I don’t know. Yeah, I’m interested to see how all of this plays out,” Trevorrow told us. “I am so excited with everything that I have seen so far. I’m just a fan. And I’m very excited about [“Star Wars: Episode VIII” director] Rian Johnson. I think he’s an incredible filmmaker... and I think all of these anthology things that they’re going to do are really interesting.”

Given the scale he’s achieved with “Jurassic World,” a series like “Star Wars” surely wouldn’t be out of Trevorrow’s reach. But “Jurassic World” is just his first blockbuster to follow his debut, 2012’s “Safety Not Guaranteed,” and he admits he’d like to focus on original films before tackling another gargantuan project.

“I feel like, at this moment, my head is in a space where I just want at least one... I want to go make an original movie,” he said. “It’s all very personal, but I want to define myself a little bit more as a filmmaker and hone my craft.

“I kind of had to go 20 years into the future and direct this movie as myself 20 years from now with that set of skills,” he continued. “And so I feel like I need to go and build the craft a little bit more. Hopefully I’m going to make one or two movies now that, yes, they’re a little bit smaller, but they’ll at least be part of a body of work.”
