'Don't' Believe The Rumor: Ellie Goulding Was Never In A Relationship With Ed Sheeran

But she did date Niall Horan.

The love triangle between Ellie Goulding, Ed Sheeran and Niall Horan just took a bit of a turn.

It all started when Ed released his single, "Don't," which was reportedly about Niall stealing Ellie from him when the two were dating. Ed did confirm that he dated the singer back in 2013, around the time of the MTV Video Music Awards, but said the story behind "Don't" was blown a bit out of proportion.

"I never let it slip. What happened was one of the newspapers in England just printed that it was confirmed when it never was," Ed told Entertainment Weekly. "We got in touch, and they took the story down. But obviously the damage had already been done by that point because every other newspaper picked up on it."

After all that speculation, it's now Ellie's turn to speak out on the matter.

"I did go on a few dates with Niall, but I was never in a relationship with Ed," Ellie told Elle UK. "I have absolutely no idea where that [rumor] came from and why it was turned into such a big thing."

Ellie went on to say that she finds it "frustrating" that female musicians are defined by their relationships, which is something she talks to friend Taylor Swift about.

"She [Taylor] gets bothered by it. It’s like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had," she said. "It’s definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists."

That's not to say she's not proud of her current relationship with McFly's Dougie Poynter, who the "Love Me Like You Do" singer said is "definitely the one forever."

"He’s been through a lot, and he has a quiet depth that I love," she said. "And you know what, when I was a teenager, I fancied him but I thought he was so out of my league. Way too good-looking for me. Calvin Harris has already offered to play at our wedding. Not that we’ve organized one. But the offer has been made."
