Will Ferrell Says Racist Frat Video Is 'A Real Argument For Getting Rid Of The System Altogether'

Ferrell criticizes frats for creating cliques and clubs.

Will Ferrell is speaking out against the racist Sigma Alpha Epsilon video that helped shut down that University of Oklahoma fraternity. In fact, the actor -- who himself was a member of a frat while in school -- is speaking out against the system altogether.

"The incident in Oklahoma, that is a real argument for getting rid of the system altogether, in my opinion, even having been through a fraternity," Ferrell said, answering readers' questions in The New York Times.

"Because when you break it down, it really is about creating cliques and clubs and being exclusionary. Fraternities were started as academic societies that were supposed to have a philanthropic arm to them. And when it’s governed by those kind of rules, then they’re still beneficial. But you gotta be careful."

Ferrell, who's become a bit of a frat icon thanks to his "Frank The Tank" character in "Old School," went on to say that he was in a very particular type of frat when he was in school.

"I was lucky in that the one I was in, we were really kind of the anti-fraternity fraternity," he said. "We didn’t take it too seriously. It was just about having fun. But I think it’s an interesting dilemma for universities these days."

Just days after the initial video emerged, another, featuring SAE's "house mom" saying the n-word repeatedly, circulated online.

OU has faced criticism, controversy and fallout in the wake of the racist videos. Students protested the leaked clips and racist statements. Waka Flocka Flame canceled a show at the university and Jean Delance, a Sooners football recruit, announced that he will not be attending the university because of the controversy.

On Friday, Josh Kinlaw, roommate of Martese Johnson, a black student at the University of Virginia who was bloodied in an altercation with a Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control agent earlier this week, told MTV News that there's a culture of racism at the university that continues, in part, because of Greek life.

“One of the things that we talked about in one of our meetings was how Greek life continues the cycle of racism that persists among our community, because of the fact that it creates an exclusive environment, which tends to exclude minorities,” the college junior said. “And because Greek life is such a big part of the social life here on the campus, that only perpetuates that racist, cultural lease that exists.”

With Ferrell weighing in, too, it looks like this could be the start of a larger conversation.
