Mattel hopes to make the blonde into the center of a live-action film franchise, and Cody's script is meant to emphasize female empowerment and the development of professional skills. Barbie dolls have been controversial since their introduction in 1959, with critical eyes cast to the mostly to the doll's unrealistic measurements and the standards of beauty that she represented.
Producer Walter Parkes gushed about Cody in a release.
"Diablo's unconventionality is just what Barbie needs," he said. "It signals we're going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We're bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie."
