In a few short weeks, we'll know who the big winners and losers of the 2015 Oscars are. But first, we need to know which stars, filmmakers and films are in the running for the competition — and today, we have our answer.

Nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced this morning by "Star Trek" star Chris Pine, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" director J.J. Abrams, and Oscar-winning "Gravity" director Alfonso Cuarón — and as with every year, there were some expected results, and some serious snubs and surprises.

"Birdman" and "The Grand Budapest Hotel" lead the pack with nine nominations each, with "The Imitation Game" close behind at eight nominations. Both "American Sniper" and "Boyhood" logged six nominations, with "Interstellar," "The Theory of Everything" and "Whiplash" clocking in at five nominations each.

Perhaps the biggest surprise is the relative shutout of "Selma," director Ava DuVernay's film about the civil rights movement in the 1960s; it only earned nominations for Best Picture and Best Song.

The Best Animated Feature Film category contains one of the other biggest surprises: "The LEGO Movie," considered by many a frontrunner to win the category, isn't even nominated. It's only nominated for Best Original Song.
