Fugees' Lauryn Hill Sends Kids To Camp

Middle school students from three different New York-area schools are heading to camp this summer courtesy of the Fugees' Lauryn Hill.

The vocalist has launched Camp Hill, the latest undertaking from her not-for-profit Refugee Project organization. Starting August 1, the two-week camp will be home for 90 disadvantaged at-risk youth between the ages of 10 and 13. Campers will get to tackle recreational activities ranging from storytelling to basketball, and will eventually stage their own talent/fashion show.

Hill and her Refugee Project enlisted the financial help of Tommy Hilfiger, Nike, the NBA, "Essence" magazine, Sony Music, and MBS Educational Services and Training in getting Camp Hill up and running.

Hill established the Refugee Project in 1996, and has pulled together a board of trustees that includes RZA, Busta Rhymes, Mariah Carey, Sean "Puffy" Combs, Nas, Q-Tip, Savion Glover, Spike Lee, and many others. The Project, in Hill's words, "encourages a change

in the attitudes and social agendas of young people from negative to positive, from violence to non-violence, from illiteracy to education, from a lack of self-respect to a comprehensive understanding and respect for our ethnic diversities.
