Kermit may have been right when he said it wasn't easy being green, but it's not so easy to be little, either. For the filming of "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey," filmmakers employed the same techniques of trick photography and scale models to make average-size actors appear, in many cases, feet shorter than they were in real life.

According to author J.R.R. Tolkien, dwarves are on average between four and five feet tall, towering over their tiny friends the hobbits, who measure in between two and four feet tall, according to the books.

However, not all of the 13 dwarves (none of whom were played by actual dwarves) necessarily had to shuffle around walking on their knees below the frame of the shot. Thorin, Fili and Kili (played by Richard Armitage, Dean O'Gorman and Aidan Turner, respectively), in particular, look to be just about man-sized in the movie, which will be released Dec. 14.
