'Maleficent''s Mistress of All Evil Wins the Weekend Box Office

Being bad proves good for selling tickets.

"Maleficent" has topped the weekend box office sans need of potions, spells or cursed spinning wheel spindles.

Backed by Angelina Jolie's razor-sharp cheekboned villainess, the film is on track to conjure over $68 million in its first weekend, making it Jolie's best opener to date. Disney's re-imagining of "Sleeping Beauty" absolutely smoked the competition, leaving Seth MacFarlane's "A Million Ways to Die in the West" in its fallen fairy dust.

Despite mixed reviews, Jolie's maniacally evil performance seems to be what bested the rest, though perhaps movie audiences were also swayed by an unconscious visual connection to another huge blockbuster?

"Maleficent" also stars Elle Fanning as Princess Aurora and Sharlto Copley as King Stefan, and includes an especially adorable acting debut by Jolie and Brad Pitt's daughter Vivienne Jolie-Pitt, who plays young Princess Aurora in the film.
