Madonna To Premiere "American Pie" During Super Bowl Pregame

Madonna plans to debut her new single, a cover of Don McLean's "American Pie," as part of the pregame musical festivities for Super Bowl XXXIV, being held at Atlanta's Georgia Dome on January 30.

Madonna will join previously announced performers Tina Turner and Travis Tritt for what is being billed as a salute to "Great American Music Of The 20th Century." Christina Aguilera, Toni Braxton, Enrique Iglesias, and Phil Collins have been tapped for the Super Bowl's halftime spectacular.

The Smothers Brothers will host the pregame show, which will also include the Georgia Tech Marching Band and the Georgia Mass Choir, and feature selections of gospel, big band, classical, country, and rock music.

"American Pie" was one of two new songs Madonna recorded for the soundtrack to "The Next Best Thing," the film in which she stars alongside Rupert Everett (see [article id="1431566"]"Madonna Revisits 'American Pie,' Records New Song For Soundtrack"[/article]).

"The Next Best Thing" is due to arrive on screens March 10.

Madonna has enjoyed success throughout her career with soundtrack songs. Her contribution to the "Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me" album, "Beautiful Stranger," has been nominated for a pair of Grammy Awards, including Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.

"Beautiful Stranger" has also been nominated for a Golden Globe, following her previous nominations for "I'll Remember," a Madonna song featured in the 1994 film "With Honors," and "This Used To Be My Playground," from the 1992 flick "A League Of Their Own."

In 1997, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber won an Academy Award for "You Must Love Me," a song Madonna performed in the film "Evita," in which she portrayed the legendary Eva Peron.

Six years earlier, composer Stephen Sondheim won an Oscar for "Sooner Or Later (I Always Get My Man)," which Madonna sang as the character Breathless Mahoney in the Warren Beatty flick, "Dick Tracy."
