Green Day Channel Blondie, Michael Jackson On 'Kill The DJ'

For more about their new '¡Uno!' album, check out 'MTV First: Green Day' on Wednesday at 7:49 p.m. on MTV and MTV.com.

On Monday night, [artist id="988"]Green Day[/artist] gave fans another preview of what to expect on next month's [article id="1689928"]¡Uno![/article] in the form of "Kill the DJ," the album's U.K. single.

And based on the song's spiky strut, it seems that Billie Joe Armstrong wasn't kidding when he described ¡Uno! -- and its successors, ¡Dos! and ¡Tre! -- as taking fans [article id="1689928"]"around the world in 37 songs."[/article] Because not only is "DJ" markedly different from ¡Uno!'s other single, [article id="1689831"]"Oh Love,"[/article] it's also unlike pretty much any other song Green Day have ever recorded -- which, as Armstrong explained, was precisely the point.

"This song is sort of a left turn, kind of going into something more of a four-on-the-floor dance groove," Armstrong said. "[Bassist] Mike [Dirnt] was really like, 'Well, let's do something that's more like Blondie's "Heart of Glass," kind of [a] disco feel to it.' We've always kind of got into grooves and things like that, with like 'When I Come Around' and 'Brain Stew,' but this is the first time we went full-on dance music, but with a Green Day approach to it."

And Dirnt echoed those sentiments, calling "Kill the DJ" our "first time attacking a four-on-the-floor beat" and comparing it not just to Blondie's 1979 new-wave/disco hybrid, but one of Michael Jackson's earliest hits too.

"It's really danceable," he said. "You know, it's got that whole 'Off the Wall' thing happening. It's pretty sexy and fun."

Unlike "Oh Love" -- the video for which, by the way, we'll [article id="1691669"]world-premiere[/article] Wednesday -- "Kill the DJ" is not nearly as, well, straightforward.

" 'Kill the DJ' is not about, you know, killing a DJ," Armstrong laughed. "It's not literal. It's more of a metaphor for information overload."

Green Day's "Oh Love" video premieres Wednesday, August 15, at 7:49 p.m. ET on MTV as part of "MTV First: Green Day." Fans outside the United States can watch by visiting OhLove.MTV.com simultaneously.
