Is A 'Paranormal Activity' Sequel On The Way?

'Maybe,' director Oren Peli tells MTV News of capitalizing on the horror flick's surprise success.

[article id="1624679"]"Paranormal Activity" is a bona fide phenomenon[/article], a success story the likes of which Hollywood hasn't seen in quite some time. A $22 million box-office gross this weekend -- which saw the film jump from 950 screens last week to almost 2,000 -- brought the sales figures up to $62.5 million. Not too shabby for a movie that cost less than $12,000 to make.

It's no surprise, then, to hear that sequel possibilities are already being considered. "We have the rights on a worldwide basis to do 'Paranormal 2,' and we're looking to see if that makes some sense," Paramount chairman Brad Grey told the Los Angeles Times in an interview Sunday.

There's a need to tread carefully, of course -- just look at "Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2" -- but "Paranormal" director Oren Peli said there is an opportunity. "Even if we had some ideas for sequels, we wouldn't be talking about them in advance," Peli said with a smile during a recent MTV News interview.

A prequel is also possible, perhaps more so, given Katie's personal history with the demon -- not to mention the way the story wraps up in "Paranormal." "Maybe," Peli offered with a sly grin about the scenario.

For now, however, the director is happy to simply ride the wave of success his atypical blockbuster, completed way back in 2007, is currently enjoying. "It's really been amazing," he said. "We're so grateful and thankful about the way the movie's been received by the fans.

"No one expected it to do this well this quickly," he continued. "Our heads are spinning. The whole thing -- just reading what people are saying about the movie and the reviews that we're getting and people Twittering and Facebooking about it -- it's all been really overwhelming."
