Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie Discuss Long-Harbored Fantasies
SANTA MONICA, California -- Brad Pitt is sick of the rumors, worn out by the rampant speculation and just plain disgusted by the accusations.
"Listen," said the man with the famously blue eyes and mischievous smile, "I know a lot of people have been talking about the chemistry, but I want to just say that Adam and I are not dating. We are compadres, we are friends, and that's as far as it goes. Strictly platonic."
Pitt is having some fun at the expense of his "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" co-star, 25-year-old Adam Brody ("The O.C."). Naturally, it isn't Pitt's relationship with Brody that has armies of camera flashes going off, but Pitt does laughingly admit that when the young star showed up to shoot a scene for their hit-man comedy wearing a "Fight Club" T-shirt, love was in the air.
"I thought he looked sexy," Pitt chuckled. "But am I revealing too much?"
Oh, and in case you haven't heard, the movie also stars a stunningly gorgeous actress named Angelina Jolie, who plays an assassin married to Pitt's equally dangerous killer -- except neither knows about the other's real line of work. Like her leading man, Jolie says the film offered the chance to play out some long-harbored fantasies ... of the onscreen variety.
Her favorite scene involved leaping off a building in a dominatrix outfit. "It's something I've always wanted to do," she said. "I want to be a leather superhero; I want to be in plastic, jumping off a building."
The wish fulfillment didn't end there, however, as "Smith" director Doug Liman insisted that Pitt and Jolie undergo intense training to portray the highly skilled contract killers. "We did a lot of training," Jolie remembered. "We're both good and pretty competitive. [We were trained in] a variety [of techniques], and it wasn't just one weapon. But it was with the SEALs and physical courses, and it was fun."
While the leggy Oscar winner diplomatically states that the two of them are equally adept with a weapon, Pitt remembers things a bit differently. "We'll just let her think that as long as she needs to," he smiled. "Distancewise? I'm the man. I don't want to brag -- but I will."
Pitt said the duo trained with "serious AKs and shotguns and loaded weapons. And running courses and clearing rooms and taking out bad guys and not shooting the good guys. The whole thing."
With all this training, it would seem only natural that the stars would occasionally find themselves daydreaming of becoming a real-life Mr. or Mrs. Smith for just a few minutes -- using rubber bullets, of course.
"Ooh," Jolie smiled, considering the possibility. "The dangerous thing is I'm sitting here thinking, 'God, I really want to think about that.' "
"Oh geez," Pitt said, "I'm not going down that road."
But enough about that -- you've read this far because you're looking for more information on the aspect of "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" that will no doubt be remembered in five, 10 or 20 years from now. Yes, of course, we're talking about the super-sexy marketing campaign.
"I did actually have a moment in New York," Jolie said of her notoriously revealing billboard pose, leaning against a wall while sporting a slit in her dress that has undoubtedly caused many a car crash. "There was a big poster, and my son saw it and went 'Mommy!' and wanted to know where that gun was [in our house]. I was like, 'I don't know. It's not Mommy's. It's fake.'
"I was like, 'God, can you look up my skirt?' " she laughed, remembering her first sighting of the billboard. "It looks like you can ... God, that's embarrassing."
Pitt gets to remain fully covered in the film's advertising campaign, but he admits that the "Smith" concept at first gave him a similar feeling of discomfort. "The hit-man idea to me was always kind of an '80s concept," he said, "but the relationship stuff is what makes this one really fun. I guess this movie approaches the idea of that world being really easy, and that the marriage is what's really difficult. That made me laugh."
They've swapped some laughs, they've swapped some bullets, and for these two A-list stars, that's all you need to know to enjoy their movie. If their fans have any leftover money that hasn't already been blown on supermarket tabloids, maybe they'll show up.
