Metal Musical Chairs: Ozzy May Hire Ex-Metallica Bassist

Metallica recently snagged Robert Trujillo from Ozzy to replace Jason Newsted.

Former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted may be swapping places with Robert Trujillo, who split from Ozzy Osbourne's band to join Metallica.

The Osbournes have invited Newsted to jam with Ozzy's group, which includes Black Label Society guitarist Zakk Wylde and ex-Faith No More drummer Mike Bordin. The bassist will travel to Los Angeles to feel things out with them next week, a source close to Newsted's camp said.

Newsted left Metallica two years ago, citing "personal and private reasons" and "physical damage" suffered by more than 14 years of touring (see [article id="1438016"]"Bassist Jason Newsted Leaves Metallica"[/article]). Shortly after, he resurfaced in Echobrain (see [article id="1453017"]"Newsted, Fans Feel 'Wicked Good' At Echobrain Tour Launch"[/article]) before hooking up with Canadian thrash metal veterans Voivod (see [article id="1459215"]"Jason Newsted Says His New Band Can Kick Metallica's Ass"[/article]).

Earlier this week, Newsted's ex-Metallica bandmates announced the addition of former Suicidal Tendencies and Infectious Grooves bassist Trujillo (see [article id="1470128"]"Metallica Have A Bassist: Ex-Ozzy Player Robert Trujillo"[/article]), who had been playing with Ozzy since 1999.

Though Newsted is a prolific songwriter and frequent collaborator with many of his heavy metal peers (see [article id="1459315"]"Jason Newsted Cleaning Out His Recording Studio Closet"[/article]), he's stressed in recent interviews that he is now very much a full-time member of Voivod. Next week the group will release Voivod, its first album with Newsted, to be followed by a U.S. tour with Sepultura in April.

Ozzy will headline this year's Ozzfest tour (see [article id="1470012"]"Ozzy, Korn, Marilyn Manson Tapped For Ozzfest"[/article]), set to begin June 28 in San Antonio, Texas.
