Godsmack Hope To Play To Apathetic Crowd At Backyard Cookout
His band is currently off the road for the first time in three years, but
Godsmack vocalist Sully Erna remains hopeful that the group will soon be
able to finish making a partly live video for "Bad Magick."
The band started working on the video with director Troy Smith (Bon Jovi,
Mighty Mighty Bosstones) in Portland, Maine, on September 10, and planned to
finish the outdoor shots the next day and the arena shots at a concert the
next evening, but the events of September 11 put a halt to Godsmack's plans.
"Obviously, we canceled the shows and it took a couple days to readjust
because we had to get our heads together. There was no f---ing way I was
going to get on the stage and even try to pretend I was having a good time,"
Erna said. "We don't have enough footage to complete it now, but I hope it
still gets shot because it's such a good track and it was a really cool
video concept."
The video for the song, which is currently #30 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, was going to feature the band playing at a cookout in front of
a handful of apathetic crowd members and one Godsmack fanatic, who tries to
rally the rest of the audience. As the enthused fan watches the performance, he
imagines the band performing in huge arenas.
"It's like his daydream," Erna said. "He's got a couple girls around him
and he's seeing [us] the way he wants Godsmack to be — f---ing huge. Finally, by the
end of the video, we're just back at that cookout and people are passed out
and he's still there on the stage cheering us on. And we just get aggravated
because we're playing this sh--ty gig and he's the only freak there,
so we just walk off the stage."
