Mellencamp Mapping Out Brief U.S. Tour

Rocker's trek kicks off in August and will play less than 30 dates.

We all know heartland rocker John Mellencamp likes small towns. Evidently, he also likes small tours.

The singer is putting together a road show that's expected to run fewer than 30 dates, according to concert promoters SFX Entertainment. The tour will officially kick off in August, though Mellencamp has also lined up a one-off date in Las Vegas on April 28.

The handful of dates already announced includes two shows in the singer's home state of Indiana, and another date across the state line in Illinois. The Wallflowers will open those shows, though there's no word on whether they'll be the lead off act for the entire tour.

Mellencamp and his band have been working in the Florida Keys on a new album, his first collection of fresh material since 1998's John Mellencamp. In 1999, Mellencamp released the acoustic rarities album Rough Harvest.
