Chris Rock On Bad Acting In Videos

In video news, the trend of the year has now become apparent: really bad acting in really big budget music videos. This trend has gotten so out of control that it's already been satirized by comic and "Video Music Awards" host Chris Rock, in his clip for the song "Champagne." Clearly, Rock is a connoisseur of this blighted form, so Abbie Kearse sat him down for an extended critique.

FEMALE FAN: Hey wait! Get me! Look, get me! (She throws an arm around Chris and screams) [824k QuickTime].

CHRIS ROCK (signing autographs): Look, it's Bobby Brown! (Points off in the distance)

ABBIE KEARSE: How did you choose what videos to parody?

ROCK: Lil' Kim, you had to do. And the Missy Elliot video, c'mon, to me, that's the best video of the year.

MTV: Well, since Chris Rock obviously has no problem poking fun at the music video world, and seeing that he was already in the

hot seat, we decided to have a little fun... (Kearse and Rock sit down to watch and comment on videos).

(Clip from Dru Hill's "Never Make A Promise" video) GIRLFRIEND: Jazz, I'm pregnant.

ROCK: Ooh, she's pregnant. Is it Urkel's baby? That's the girl from Urkel, right?

KEARSE (lauging): Yes.

JAZZ, Dru Hill: Why you look so sad?

ROCK: Because she knows you're leaving! [1.1MB QuickTime]

KEARSE: I believe that's Jazz from Dru Hill. How do you rate his performance as an actor?

ROCK: He was all right. He played it light, which you don't see a lot in the r&b video world.

(Clip from R. Kelly's "Down Low" video. A man throws R. Kelly to the ground, grabs him by the shirt and yells, "Look at me!")

ROCK: Uh oh, R. Kelly. (Imitating the yelling man on screen)

"Look at me, I'm in the Isley Brothers!" It's like Ronald Isley beat him up for a bad sample... "If you ever sample my music again!..." [2.2MB QuickTime]

(Clip from Toni Braxton's "Un-break My Heart")

ROCK: Now, what's up with this weave (referring to Braxton's curly wig in the video)? Was she like auditioning for Annie or something? What's going on here?

KEARSE: She said in an interview that it's a take on "A Star Is Born.

ROCK: Really. Okay! I missed that one.

(Clip from Celine Dione's "It's All Coming Back To Me" video. Dione is running through a mansion.)

ROCK: The UPS man is at the door and she's scared she's gonna miss her package.

(Clip from video for "Mo Money Mo Problems," by Notorious B.I.G. and featuring Mase and Puff Daddy)

ROCK: This video is ridiculous. I love this video.

KEARSE: "I'm comin' out." What does that say?

ROCK: I don't know about all that! Well,

he's probably coming outside since Suge's in jail now. (Kearse laughs) That's probably, that's what that's about. "I'm comin'!" He looks outside, "I'm...!

Can you have a hook that less people can relate to? "The more money we come across, the more problems..." My little brother's like, "I love this record! -- Wait a minute. I'm broke!" [2MB QuickTime]

(Watching melodramatic explosions going off behind a stoic Puff Daddy in the video) Look at that, you can't top that. You can't put on a video after that. That's the headline video.
