The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion served up a steaming plate of new material when the band hit the stage at New York's Bowery Ballroom Saturday night for a one-off gig before launching a tour later this month.
JSBX hit the stage Saturday armed with most of the tunes on "Acme" (the band's next effort, due October 20) and only a few classics like "Afro," "2 Kindsa Love," and "Flava."
With so few old favorites among the setlist, the evening turned into a coming out party of sorts for new songs like "Magical Colors," "Attack," "Do You Wanna Get Heavy?," "Torture," and ""Talk About The Blues," the first single from "Acme."
But while the songs might have been new to many of the JSBX fans gathered at the New York venue, they're old hat to the Blues Explosion by now.
Blues Explosion frontman Jon Spencer told MTV Saturday before taking the stage. "I think a lot of people get hung up on a record, and... I don't think a band should try and do the same thing live. That's the fun of playing a show. A live show is one thing, and a record's another thing. They're both a hell of a lot of fun." [28.8 RealVideo]
